MOOREHEAD CITY FISHING OVERVIEW - Giant Bluefin Tuna

Morehead City provides some of most exciting offshore sportfishing in the world. During December, January, and February, Cape Lookout becomes the home to the biggest of all the tunas, the Giant Bluefin. Historically the giant bluefin make there way offshore of Morehead every year coming from the north Atlantic and coming from the Mediterranean ocean to feed on the abundance of bunker(bait). Bunker makes its annual migration down the coast and the Giant Bluefin seem to be there to feed on them on there way to the breeding grounds which has been trace to the Gulf of Mexico. Morehead City has a shoal protruding from its shoreline called Cape Lookout. Cape Lookout Shoals provides perfect structure for the giant bluefin to trap the bait in shallow water. Giant Bluefin eat 50% of their body weight every day they can find food. Most giants caught during this time are 400 to 800 pounds. Just seeing a strike, is quite a site not to mention, watching these big fish skying out of the water. Heavy trolling gear is the way most of the fish are caught and for the most part they caught in water 40-100ft deep. You can only imagine what the bite is like, along with the fight to match.
